How to study carpentry

Thinking of working as a carpenter? This is a great choice if you want a secure job that will always be in demand.

It also lets you skip those years at TAFE or university so you can start earning an income faster.

Let’s look at some official vs online carpentry course options so you can choose the right path to becoming a carpenter.

What type of carpentry courses are there?

1. Online carpentry courses

If you already have a day job then it makes sense to consider online carpentry courses that you can do in your own time.

But while online carpentry courses teach you carpentry basics and give you that flexibility to juggle all your commitments, we don’t recommend this option.

Online carpentry courses are not accredited or recognised by employers so they don’t help you get a job in the long run.

Avoid spending money on online carpentry courses  as they won’t pay off in the future.

2. Carpentry certifications

A better investment is an official carpentry certification such as a CPC30220 Certificate III in Carpentry.

You complete this carpentry certification at the same time as doing your carpentry apprenticeship.

This means you’ll be learning the skills and knowledge to do carpentry on the job while working for a real employer and earning an income.

You’ll do hands on carpentry work alongside experienced carpenters and demonstrate your new skills to an assessor as you work.

In this way, the Cert 3 in Carpentry lets you earn while you learn so you don’t have to wait until after finishing your course to start supporting yourself.

Why is it worth getting a carpentry certification?

Recognised everywhere

The Certificate III in Carpentry is a nationally accredited course that’s official in all states and territories in Australia including:

  • Victoria
  • New South Wales
  • Queensland
  • Australian Capital Territory
  • Northern Territory
  • Tasmania
  • Western Australia

Even if you start out working in Victoria and choose to move to a different state in a few years’ time, you won’t need to get a new qualification.

The Certificate 3 in Carpentry is even recognised overseas in countries across Europe, Asia, Africa, America and just about anywhere.

Receiving your Certificate 3 in Carpentry from an Australian training provider like Builders Academy also gives you a competitive advantage because the quality of our carpentry certifications is recognised as high around the world.

Gets jobs

Every construction employer in Australia knows the Certificate III in Carpentry, so it’s a great qualification to have when you’re looking for jobs.

When an employer sees that you have a Certificate 3 in Carpentry, they know that you have all the skills and knowledge to do the job to a high standard.

Remember that without the cert 3, you’ll be competing for jobs against people who do have it, making you a weaker candidate.

After completing your carpentry certification, you may even have the option of continuing to work for the same employer where you did your apprenticeship.

This would mean having a guaranteed job after your course is finished.

No carpentry licence required

Some trades work requires a licence in Australia so it’s important to know the rules.

Unlike plumbing and electrical which require licences and registrations, there is no such thing as a carpentry licence.

But that doesn’t mean that you can do carpentry work without any training or qualifications.

While it may be possible to get a job as a carpenter without a carpentry certificate or apprenticeship, it can be much harder.

As an unqualified carpenter applying for jobs, you’ll be competing against all those people who have certificates and apprenticeships.

The next best thing to getting a carpentry licence is by completing your apprenticeship getting a Certificate 3 in Carpentry.

Builds your career

If you want a career in construction with room to advanced your skills and income,  then it’s worth it to study carpentry

A lot of people start with a  carpentry certification before becoming registered builders, starting their own businesses, or becoming construction professionals.

After working as a certified carpenter for a few years, you might look into becoming a builder by doing a CPC40120 Certificate IV in Building and Construction (Building) or a Diploma of Building and Construction (Building) (CPC50220).

Is it worth it to study carpentry?

Getting an official carpentry certification with a Cert 3 in Carpentry has so many benefits.

Unlike online carpentry courses, the Cert 3 in Carpentry is recognised by employers in Australia and beyond.

With a Cert 3 in Carpentry, you’ll find it much easier to get a job, making it well worth your time and money to study carpentry.
