What is self-paced study?

Self-paced building courses are online certificates and diplomas that you do in your own time when it’s convenient for you.

While it may seem strange to do a building course–which is very practical and hands-on–through the online format, we have truly mastered the art!

We offer two self-paced building courses online that give busy tradies greater flexibility to achieve their goals.

These are:

Unlike some self-paced online courses which involve reading a textbook from a screen, our self-paced building courses at BAA are much more interactive and let you watch pre-recorded videos and chat with your trainer.

Our self paced courses are a bit different to our Virtual Classroom Model which is also online. The self-paced courses let you do your schoolwork when you want to while the virtual classroom is at a set time like a regular class that you attend virtually.

Pros and Cons of self-paced courses

While self-paced learning gives you greater flexibility to complete your studies at times that suit you, it can also be a little daunting.

Some people feel that they may not be able to keep up with the workload or that they weren’t getting as much support from the trainers.

The good news is that our self-paced building courses online have been designed by experts to make sure that you get all the support you need to keep up with your assessments and so you never feel alone.

At the same time, there are things that you can do to make sure that you keep up with your studies and make the most of your experience.

Here are some dos and don’ts to help.

Dos and Don’ts of faced paced learning

Don’t hesitate to reach out

The self-paced study is all about taking control of your time and using it in the best way to reach your own goals.

But that doesn’t mean you need to do your studies in isolation.

When you do one of our self-paced building courses, your trainer is never far away. Whenever you get stuck or need help with something, reach out and give them a call on the phone.

Your trainer at BAA regularly helps a lot of students who are doing self-paced studies, answering their questions and clarifying concepts.

You definitely won’t be the only person reaching out for help.

Do watch all the videos

The self-paced study is best suited to people who can manage their own time well.

If you have never done a self-paced study before and are not sure if you have the right time-management skills, you can still succeed.

Even if you haven’t done it before, you can learn to develop time management skills through our self-paced courses and surprise yourself.

It all starts with committing to watching the pre-recorded videos.

Once you take the time to do that, you’re well on your way to successful self-paced course completion.

Don’t avoid your assessments

Because our self-paced building courses online are so well designed to support and guide students, it’s pretty rare for people to flunk out.

But when they do, it can sometimes come down to avoiding it and lacking confidence.

We want you to know that hundreds of tradies have successfully completed their assessments and we are confident that you can too.

If you find yourself avoiding your assessments, call your trainer. They have helped many similar students in your position to overcome the challenges.

Do get into a routine

One of the best ways to approach yourself self-paced studies is by creating your own routine.

With self-paced learning, you can’t just close your eyes and hope that the work magically gets done at some point.

Instead, you have to look at your calendar and choose a few times per week to watch your videos and do your assessments.

Research has shown that routines help people succeed in their goals.

With a routine that suits your unique lifestyle, you can succeed in self-paced learning and complete your building and construction qualifications.
