Strategies for successful online learning

As a top building school in Australia, we’ve been offering building construction courses online for years, even before online learning was popularised by the pandemic.

In our mission to train up and best support Australia’s future tradies and builders, we found that online learning was a better choice for some of our students.

While we’re stoked that online learning is becoming more accessible and common everyday, we’re also aware that it’s not always so easy to switch from classroom to computer.

So here are our tips on how to make the most out of your online building and construction courses.

1. Make time

The feedback from our graduates and trainers is that one of the best strategies for successful online learning is time management.

Our online courses such as the Certificate IV in Building and Construction (Building) (CPC40120) and Diploma of Building and Construction (Building) (CPC50220) are delivered either through a virtual classroom or in a self-paced model, which both require you to set aside time to watch videos, do activities and complete assessments.

Unless you set aside the right amount of time to complete these weekly tasks and lessons, then you might fall behind, struggle to catch up, and ultimately fail the course.

2. Be healthy

If you are doing online learning, it’s likely you’ve chosen this option because you are juggling other commitments.

If you already work in a full time job or have a young family, then starting an online course is going to create more work and require more effort.

One of our top tips for successful online learning during this busy phase of your life is to look after your health.

Although taking the time to prepare nutritious meals and getting enough exercise seems like extra work, it’s actually going to make things easier for you by giving you more energy to get things done.

3. Choose your pace

Another one of our best strategies for successful online learning is to choose the online learning option that suits you best.

When you study and online building course with us, you get to choose from 2 online learning options:

1. Virtual classroom

You attend a class at the same time every week but rather than attending in person you login online. You will join a trainer and a group of other students and be able to talk to them in real-time.

2. Self-paced study

In self-paced study, you watch pre-recorded video lessons at any time and in any place that suits you. This is even more flexible than the Virtual Classroom but can require more discipline and better time management.

4. Rest up

Just as keeping healthy gives you the energy to keep on top of your commitments, rest helps make you resilient to stress.

Make sure you are getting enough sleep by going to bed early and avoid using your phone at night.

Be sure to make time for any activities that are relaxing or pleasurable to you, whether it’s catching up with mates or bingeing the latest releases on Netflix.

5. Connect with others

While online learning does give you freedom to juggle more commitments and study when and where it suits you, it can also feel isolating at times.

But when you study with us, you don’t have to be daunted by the idea of studying alone without any support.

When you study online building courses in our Virtual Classroom or self-paced study option, you will be able to contact your trainers and fellow classmates to ask questions or confirm what you just learned.

6. Study at a trusted school

It may sound simple but it’s one of the most overlooked tips for successful online learning.

Choose a reputable school to help maximise your chances of success with online courses.
