A Class Visit: RII30813 Certificate III in Civil Construction Plant Operations

15/09/2016

We spent a day with our #BuildersAcademy RII30813 Certificate III in Civil Construction Plant Operations students trying out the rollers, front loaders and excavators at our training site in Rockbank. Check out the gallery to see what’s involved.
The Certificate III in Civil Construction Plant Operations RII30813 covers a range of skills in areas such as plant operations and equipment, hand and power tools, basic levelling and excavation.

The practical training comes in after nine weeks of theory. Once they’ve completed all their assignments, the students spend another nine weeks on the machines.

Trainer Val spends half his time in the classroom and the other half out on the training grounds with the students and the machines. “In their first day of theory I took them out on the excavator, showed them the absolute fundamentals of how an excavator essentially operates and what it is designed to do. Then we come in and discuss it theoretically, complete an assessment on it, and that’s how it starts.”

The roller sets up the surface for the next step in the construction process. “This is the groundwork of building,” student Carol says.

Smoko is over. Val gets back into it. “At the theory stage we show the students videos and powerpoints. How to do it. How not to do it. How to have a bit of fun with it. We even show some bad mistakes that have happened.”

civil6

On his second week as a student, Eddy’s having a good time learning the finer details of what Civil Construction involves. “We are doing the basics: the healthy and safety. It’s very interesting. We were on the excavator last week, having a go just to get the hang of it.”

Trainer Michael chats to Luke about back-blading to get things evened out and prepped right. “The method is to smooth out a surface that is on a roll. As you can see this surface is all lumpy, so when he goes over it with the blade, he will bring it back and get it nice and flat. After that the roller goes over it to seal it which makes it a nice hard surface for the next step.”

Renee’s practicing on the skid steer. “I’m doing the course because it’s a good opportunity. I’ve done some work with tractors and I like hands-on kind of work.”

civil9

Meanwhile, Luke is perfecting his back-blading technique.

Carol’s dad was a builder, which made her keen to get into it. “My favourite part of the course is riding the machines. It’s fun. It’s like being a big kid, it doesn’t feel like work. Understanding it from the ground level — it doesn’t really get much better.”

The trainers are always close by to lend a hand and make sure the students are completing all the tasks in the certificate.

Thanks to our trainers Val and Michael, and all the students for giving us a tour. Legends.
