1. Discover the basics
If you’re interested in learning about construction but not sure where to start then a basic certificate is a great first step.
When you do a pre apprenticeship, also known as a Certificate II in Construction Pathways (CPC20220), you learn the basic skills and knowledge to work in a primary trade within the construction industry.
Primary trades within the construction industry are the most common trades that have the most jobs and include:
- Carpentry
- Bricklaying
- Plastering
- And more
When you do a Certificate II in Construction Pathways, you’ll learn some of the general beginner skills for doing these trades.
This lets you try out and experience different trades before you decide what type of construction work you want to learn.
In a Certificate II in Construction Pathways, you get introduced to some of these core construction skills:
- How to use basic tools
- Basic levelling
- Stonemasonry
- Civil construction waterproofing
- Plastering
- Bricklaying
- Floor tiling
- Blocklaying
- Carpentry
2. Learn a trade
Another way to learn about construction is by skipping the pre-apprenticeship and diving into a trade.
When you learn a trade you need to do a certificate 3 and an apprenticeship, usually for about three or four years.
Choose from trades including carpentry, plumbing, bricklaying, electrical and more.
If you want to learn about construction in general then the best trade to learn is carpentry.
A lot of builders start out as carpenters because this trade covers the basics of construction work.
To learn the trade of carpentry, you need to do a CPC30220 Certificate III in Carpentry.

3. Tuition free building courses
With so much housing and public infrastructure needing to be built in Victoria, construction work is in high demand.
But there is a skills shortage meaning there are not enough workers to do all the jobs available.

The following construction courses are eligible for government subsidies :
Do this certificate IV to get qualified to manage low rise single storey residential construction projects.
Do this diploma to get qualified in managing mid rise residential construction projects up to 3 storeys tall.
4. Get a builders licence
One of the most popular ways of learning about construction is by becoming a qualified builder.
To become a qualified builder you need a builder’s licence—also known as a builders registration—with the Victorian Building Authority.
This registration process is not easy and hundreds of people fail to get their licence every year.
