MEET MARK: CERTIFICATE IV IN PLUMBING AND SERVICES STUDENT AT BUILDERS ACADEMY

We caught up with Builders Academy student Mark Byrne, who’s prepping for his licences with a CPC40920 Certificate IV in Plumbing and Services.

“I’m currently a registered plumber. My old man’s a plumber and he got me into it with an apprenticeship back in 1998. I’ve been working as a registered plumber since 2001.”
“Now I’ve ventured out to do my Cert IV, do a bit more work and further my career.”
“Completing the Cert IV and getting licensed will enable me to advertise my own company, do my own maintenance work and complete compliance certificates for the VBA. And it also enables you to make more money.”
“Being out of the learning industry for over 15 years, it’s been good to come back and learn new things like new technology, and finding out about blokes that have worked on an area that you yourself haven’t worked on.”
“Everyone has come from different fields. My main field, the area I’ve spent the last 15 years in, has been construction – big civil stuff. Learning things today about gas appliances is new to me. I haven’t learnt this sort of stuff since back in my trade school.”
“Today we’re doing practical work with appliances and learning about backflow testing, which is a separate ticket.”
“These guys are pretty much all mates now.”
“I’ll be paying my licence in 2017 and advertising, slowly going out on my own, building my own client base in the northern suburbs of Melbourne.”
