How to Create a Carpentry Business Plan
Starting a carpentry business in Australia is a great way to earn top dollar, be your own boss, and launch your construction career.
But every year, a lot of people try to start a business in building and construction and fail.
Unless you know how to start a carpentry business, you risk losing a lot of money and ending up in debt.
Here, we show you how to start a carpentry business the right way, so you get the best chance of success.
Step 1: Get ready for trades school
If you’re going to run a carpentry business you’ll need to know the trade of carpentry. And that means going to trades school.
Don’t worry, trade school is nothing like high school or even university. It is vocational training that teaches you hands-on practical skills that you can use in the real world.
We’ll talk a little bit about how to study carpentry at trade school in the next step, but the first step on your journey to starting your carpentry business is making sure you’re ready to begin.
If you’re over 16 years of age and you can read and write at the year 10 level, then there’s a good chance you’ll be ready to start learning carpentry.
But if you do need to brush up on your literacy and numeracy before starting, or if you just want to get a feel for what studying at trade school is like, then you could do a Certificate II in Construction Pathways (CPC20220).
This cert 2 is a great way to discover whether becoming a carpenter and starting your own business is right for you.
Step 2: Get a certificate
Now that you’re ready to study carpentry it’s time to sign up for your CPC30220 Certificate III in Carpentry.
The Cert 3 in Carpentry is the best way to learn carpentry because it teaches you all of the age-old skills along with the latest standards and technologies.
The Cert III in Carpentry is a nationally recognised certificate, so this qualification makes you one of the top picks for jobs if you decide to work for an employer.
Step 3: Do an apprenticeship
Certificate 3 is done alongside a carpentry apprenticeship, which is where you work as a carpenters apprentice for an employer and earn entry level full-time wage.
As you do your certificate and apprenticeship, you’ll be able to study under experienced carpenters, learning from what they do well and from their mistakes as you go.
You’ll also see how a carpentry business is run before you take the next step to starting your own business.
Step 4: Start making money
Congratulations you’ve completed your certificate 3 in carpentry and your apprenticeship and you’re now a fully qualified carpenter.
You are ready to work for an employer, to work for yourself as a sole trader, or even to start your own business.
The average carpenter in Australia earns around $77,000 per year, and a carpentry business owner’s salary can even go higher than this.
The only thing that you have to keep in mind is that your carpentry business will be limited to doing jobs worth less than $10,000.
If you want to do jobs worth more than $10,000 in your carpentry business, proceed to step 5!
Step 5: Get a builders registration
Once you have mastered the trade of carpentry and want to earn the big bucks in your carpentry business. You’ll need to get a builders registration with the Victorian Building Authority.
This is what qualifies you to work on big carpentry or building projects worth more than $10,000.
Sadly, the builders registration is as hard as it sounds. Every year hundreds of applicants fail to get their registrations.
But at Builders Academy Australia, our graduates have an excellent success rate at passing their builders’ registrations, especially if they do our CPC40120 Certificate IV in Building and Construction (Building) or CPC50220 Diploma of Building and Construction (Building).
While the cert 3 in carpentry teaches you to be a master in your trade, the certificate or diploma teach you how to run a business in building and construction.
At the same time as your cert 4 or diploma, you also do a free builders registration mentorship so you get one-on-one training on how to pass your builders registration application with flying colours.
