How a Diploma of Building and Construction is Structured

16/02/2018

The CPC50220 Diploma of Building and Construction (Building) is one of those building courses that can help you reach the highest levels in the industry.

While it might seem like a no-brainer to enrol, it’s natural to have a few questions about how the course is structured. Before getting started, we look a little deeper into what you can expect from the course, as well as where it can lead you.

How long is the course?

At Builders Academy Australia (BAA), we understand how important convenience is. That’s why the CPC50220 Diploma of Building and Construction is structured as a part-time course, run two nights a week.

Depending on your level of experience within the industry, the diploma will take you between 40-51 weeks to complete. During the course, you’ll be expected to commit fifteen hours a week to class time and self-study.

What are the entry requirements?

We run two separate streams for this course. One is for people with 5+ years of industry experience (experienced stream). The other is for people with less than 5 years of experience (standard stream).

Keep in mind that to study our experienced stream, you must be currently working in the building and construction industry with at least five years experience under your belt, or you’ve already completed a qualification such as the CPC40120 Certificate IV in Building and Construction (Building).

The Certificate IV is a fantastic next step after completing your apprenticeship. It will give you the skills and knowledge needed to obtain your building license with the Victorian Building Authority, and even start up your own small business.

Virtual or physical classrooms?

At BAA, we believe students should have the choice to study building and construction online. You might be working as a professional tradesperson by day, living in a remote or rural part of Australia, or have family and lifestyle commitments to keep. In between all this, we get that finding time to attend physical classes can be tricky.

While the benefits of online building and construction courses are clear, we’ve taken the idea one step further. Instead of the self-paced style of online learning, our building courses offer real-time virtual classroom settings. Essentially, this means you can interact, learn and take part in discussions as if you were in a normal classroom.

Of course, if learning in a physical classroom is more your thing, the option to do this is available too. What you decide to do will simply depend on your location, professional life, and personal preferences.

How will I be assessed?

In this course, you’ll be required to complete 18 units, made up of 13 core and 5 elective units. For more information about these units, check out the brochure for this building and construction online course here.

Our trainers will assess you on your classroom participation, observation, practical and written presentation, and self-paced exercises online in your own time. You’ll also be assessed on how your portfolio is developed throughout the duration of the course.

Where does this diploma take me?

Armed with a nationally recognised qualification, you can start pursuing more supervisory roles within the industry. Depending on your experience and interests, you might decide to become a:

  • Construction Manager
  • Project Supervisor
  • Site Supervisor
  • Building Estimator
  • Foreperson

From here, you can take it one step further and enrol in a university degree. This can widen your prospects even further, opening up potential careers pathways in building contracting, property development, and contract administration – just to name a few.

On the other hand, you might decide to take the leap into self-employment and set up your own small business. With the industry constantly evolving, it’s a smart move, and you’ll find many opportunities to develop a niche and carve out a rewarding career.

Ultimately, the CPC50220 Diploma of Building and Construction will open up a range of doors across the industry, and offer you some of the highest paid jobs in Australia.
