CAN CARPENTRY BE SELF-TAUGHT? THE BEST WAYS TO LEARN CARPENTRY

26/05/2023

If you’re after a secure and gratifying career in the construction industry, look no further than carpentry.

This skilled trade is highly valued, both in Australia and around the world. And when it comes to creating homes, buildings and infrastructure, carpenters won’t be replaced by robots any time soon! That means that this is a secure job with solid future growth.

But what does it take to become a carpenter? Let’s explore the best ways to learn.

How to learn carpentry in 2023

Carpentry is a skilled trade. It takes many years of study and practice to become good at carpentry — especially if you’re looking to do it as a career.

Australian carpenters require a CPC30220 Certificate III in Carpentry and a 3-year apprenticeship to be fully qualified and ready to take on the building and construction industry.

Can carpentry be self-taught?

Carpentry can only be self-taught at an amateur level, such as when you study carpentry online.

If you want to work as a professional, fully-qualified carpenter in Australia and earn an income in the construction industry, you have to do the Certificate III in Carpentry and apprenticeship.

In practical terms, this means you can study carpentry online or using self-taught books or videos to learn how to do a few odds and ends around the house, like repair a cabinet or carve a bird bath.

However, if you want to get a full-time job in the construction industry, you won’t be able to get hired based on your online course or self-taught books and videos — unless you also do a Certificate III and apprenticeship.

The Certificate III in Carpentry is a great place to start in your construction career. It gives you the skills and knowledge to build, repair, and maintain residential housing, as well as skills in construction and joinery.

With this certificate under your belt, you’ll be able to find work as a carpenter anywhere in Australia, in big cities and country towns.

After graduating, you might have the option to continue on with your apprenticeship employer, or seek a new job elsewhere.

Where can a Certificate III in Carpentry take me in the building and construction industry?

While the Certificate III sets you up so you can dive into employment, it can also be your stepping stone into further studies.

If you feel up for a bigger challenge after working on the tools for three years, you can choose to go on to do another certificate or diploma and pursue managerial work.

You could take the Certificate IV in Building and Construction (Building) (CPC40120) and become a licensed builder, or even go on to start your own business.

Alternatively, you could do a Diploma of Building and Construction (Building) (CPC50220) to work on multi-level developments, or gain entry into a bachelor’s degree at Victoria University.

Carpentry apprenticeship

Our school is based on the principle that builders should teach builders. So when you study carpentry with us, you’ll do an apprenticeship with qualified carpenters who can show you the ropes in real time, in the real industry.

You’ll learn carpentry on the job with an employer, and do an additional two hours of self-paced study per week.

Together with both you and your employer, we’ll organise a training plan and a number of on-the-job assessments along the way. We’ll also chat with your employer to get updates about your progress to make sure you’re on the right track at all times.
